The current resource-hogging generative AI technologies could run into a wall, prompting many companies to look for more efficient compute. Some are on the bleeding edge: See the “food for thought” item below. But others are already well underway on a number of fronts, such as Multiverse Computing, which is using quantum computing-inspired software for AI model training, as well as Efficient Compute, Neural Magic, Taalas and, not least, Groq, the current hot thing in chatbots thanks to its ultrafast language-optimized custom processor.
"The real idea was, OK, we have AI systems that are expensive to train — they are large and so on, and could we just prepare something that is not only smaller, because you have to fit the system somewhere, but also consumes less energy,” said Enrique Lizaso (pictured), co-founder and chief executive officer of Multiverse Computing. “We analyzed the problem and said, ‘Yes, this is a particular problem that fits into quantum computing.’ Then, at some point … somebody inside the company suggested, ‘OK, we have done that in the manufacturing line … can we apply that to LLMs?'"

Climate change is here, but tech could help us adapt
While France’s high-tech cheerleading can sometimes strike a nationalistic tone, it is not taking an isolationist approach to quantum computing. French researchers formed a coalition with their quantum colleagues across Europe to apply for money from the EU’s Quantum Flagship programme. That has already led one of Germany’s national supercomputing centres JUWELS to purchase PASQAL’s technology. “Participating in European projects allows for greater ambition,” Mehr says, “because we then receive co-funding from Europe. But it's also a good way for us to expose these French devices to European research and industrial communities. That makes things a bit more collaborative.” Spain’s Multiverse Computing, which is developing quantum computing software, and Finland’s IQM have also opened offices in Paris. That makes them eligible for support under the French quantum plan.
GPT-4, PaLM, Claude, Bard, LaMDA, LLaMA, Chinchilla, Sparrow – the list of large-language models on the market continues to grow. But behind their remarkable capabilities, users are discovering substantial costs. While LLMs offer tremendous potential, understanding their economic implications is crucial for businesses and individuals considering their adoption.
