- The project is expected to mobilize up to €5 billion in investment and position Spain as one of Europe's leading hubs for advanced computing and artificial intelligence.
- Multiverse Computing is participating as the consortium's technology partner, holding a 4% equity stake, alongside SETT (47.99%), Telefónica, ACS and Santander (15.67% each), and the Government of Catalonia (1%).
San Sebastián, July 1, 2026. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez today welcomed representatives of the recently established public-private consortium at the Moncloa Palace to discuss the development of Spain's first advanced artificial intelligence gigafactory. The meeting was attended by the Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, Óscar López; the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa; Telefónica Chairman Marc Murtra; ACS Chairman Florentino Pérez; Banco Santander CEO Héctor Grisi; and Multiverse Computing CEO Enrique Lizaso.
The project, which is majority privately owned, is awaiting the launch of the European Commission's call to compete for one of Europe's flagship AI gigafactories. The consortium's proposal is based on a multi-site model, with facilities planned in Móra la Nova (Tarragona) and Madrid to host the technological infrastructure.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration and highlighted the role of the consortium's member companies in a project expected to mobilize up to €5 billion in investment. The initiative will enable Spanish universities, SMEs, research centers, and public institutions to significantly expand their research and innovation capabilities while strengthening Spain's competitiveness in the global AI race.
Optimized technology for critical AI infrastructure
Multiverse Computing contributes its expertise in quantum computing and optimized artificial intelligence, together with a comprehensive AI data center software stack that includes GPU orchestration, AI services, and sovereignty controls. These capabilities complement the expertise provided by the consortium's other partners in infrastructure, financial services, and digital connectivity.
"Being part of this consortium is an opportunity for technology developed in Spain to compete at the forefront of Europe. Our role is to ensure that the infrastructure we build is not only powerful, but also efficient and sovereign," said Enrique Lizaso, Co-Founder & CEO of Multiverse Computing.
The consortium's bid to the European Commission is part of the European strategy to strengthen the continent's AI capabilities and build competitive, secure technological infrastructure aligned with the European Union's values and regulatory framework.
