Europe is entering a decisive phase in the global AI race. As demand for compute infrastructure accelerates and AI becomes a critical layer of economic competitiveness, a new generation of sovereign AI infrastructure is needed to ensure Europe can train, deploy, and scale advanced AI systems on its own terms.
Today, Multiverse Computing is proud to announce its participation in the AION consortium, an ambitious initiative bringing together leading French and European technology, infrastructure, energy, and industrial players to support the development of a European AI Gigafactory in France.
The consortium includes Ardian, Artefact, Bull, Capgemini, EDF, the iliad Group, Orange, and Scaleway, alongside a broader ecosystem of AI and deep tech organizations including Hugging Face, Kyutai, LightOn, INRIA, GENCI, Quandela, Nokia, SiPearl, and Multiverse Computing, among others.
Building the foundations of European AI sovereignty
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most strategic infrastructures of the 21st century. Access to large-scale compute capacity is no longer simply a technical requirement, it is a question of industrial autonomy, economic resilience, and geopolitical competitiveness.
The AION project aims to address this challenge by supporting the emergence of a world-class European AI infrastructure capable of training and deploying next-generation AI models at scale.
Backed by the European Commission’s AI Gigafactories initiative, the project is designed to provide Europe with sovereign, competitive, and sustainable AI compute capabilities. According to the consortium’s roadmap, the proposed infrastructure could eventually support up to 100,000 GPUs and represent investments exceeding €10 billion over time.
France offers a particularly strong foundation for this ambition, combining low-carbon and stable energy production, advanced digital infrastructure, and one of Europe’s most dynamic AI ecosystems.
Advancing efficient and scalable AI
At Multiverse Computing, we believe Europe’s AI future will depend not only on access to compute, but also on how efficiently that compute is used.
As part of the AION ecosystem, Multiverse Computing brings expertise in AI model optimization and compression technologies designed to reduce infrastructure costs, improve inference efficiency, and accelerate the deployment of large-scale AI systems.
The next generation of AI infrastructure must balance performance with sustainability and operational efficiency. Enabling organizations to do more with fewer computational resources will be essential to scaling AI responsibly across Europe.
The AION consortium’s emphasis on openness, sovereignty, and responsible AI strongly aligns with Multiverse Computing’s mission to help organizations unlock the full value of AI while reducing computational overhead and energy consumption.
A collaborative European effort
AION represents a broad industrial alliance spanning cloud infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, AI applications, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and research institutions.
The initiative is structured around four core principles:
- Performance — deploying world-class AI infrastructure for the European economy
- Trust — reinforcing strategic autonomy through sovereign technologies and infrastructure
- Openness — supporting open-source technologies and collaboration across the ecosystem
- Responsibility — ensuring AI development is aligned with sustainability and societal impact
By combining expertise across the full AI value chain, the consortium aims to create a resilient and competitive foundation for Europe’s AI ecosystem.
Looking ahead
The development of sovereign AI infrastructure will play a critical role in Europe’s ability to remain competitive in the AI era. Projects such as AION demonstrate the importance of collaboration between industrial leaders, technology innovators, public institutions, and research organizations to accelerate this effort.
“I’m delighted that the AION initiative launched last year is continuing to gain traction and attract broad support. Within this richly diverse industrial alliance, Scaleway will focus on its core expertise of providing an open and interoperable sovereign cloud and AI platform serving businesses, researchers and public-sector players. I’m convinced that this project, which includes leaders across the entire value chain, will help consolidate the foundations of a European AI sector built on openness, control and trust.” shared Damien Lucas, CEO of Scaleway.
“Europe has the talent, the research excellence, and the industrial ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. What is needed now is the infrastructure capable of supporting that ambition at scale. By joining the AION consortium, Multiverse Computing is contributing its expertise in AI optimization and efficient computing to help build a more sovereign, sustainable, and competitive European AI ecosystem.” said Enrique Lizaso, Co-founder & CEO of Multiverse Computing.
